Neckarsulm, November 7, 2024. PreZero, the environmental services provider of the Schwarz Group, is now supporting Red Bull Stadion München GmbH, the operating company of the multifunctional SAP Garden sports arena in Munich's Olympic Park, with its waste and recyclables management. Among other things, the venue is to be certified to DIN SPEC 91436 with bronze maturity level. The standard measures the maturity level of waste prevention, recycling and reuse of waste and recyclable materials. In the case of bronze certification, independent experts primarily verify that 85% of the waste generated on the arena site is recycled. Among other things, Munich's new landmark is striving to become a European pioneer in terms of sustainability. In addition to efficient waste disposal, SAP Garden's environmentally friendly concept also includes the use of sustainable materials, renewable energy and energy-saving cooling of the ice rink.
The main building of SAP Garden, which measures 29 meters from floor to ceiling, would even fit Munich's Victory Gate and Quadriga. The SAP Garden also includes three underground ice rinks with a total ice surface of around 5,400 square meters. Almost 150,000 visitors have experienced top national and international sport here since it opened - be it ice hockey with EHC Red Bull Munich or basketball with FC Bayern.
However, those responsible for the impressive venue don't just have their eye on the pitch. With the cooperation with PreZero, the international environmental service provider of the Schwarz Group, the SAP Garden is also positioning itself as a role model in the forward-looking field of sustainability: "We are always concerned with closing cycles and keeping residual waste to a minimum," says Marcus Sagitz, Titular Managing Director Marketing & Corporate Affairs at PreZero. "Thanks to our previous projects in soccer, we can draw on a huge data set of experience and figures. This enables us to help SAP Garden achieve superlatives in the area of circular economy too."
PreZero was already known to those responsible for the SAP Garden. It was an obvious choice to at least install PreZero's separation systems throughout the fan area. The internationally active environmental service provider based in Neckarsulm has already transformed the PreZero Arena, TSG Hoffenheim's venue, into the first certified zero waste arena in the German soccer league, currently with silver status. The SAP Garden now wants to do the same. Together with PreZero, the aim is to achieve bronze certification in accordance with DIN Spec 91436 from TÜV Süd - incidentally, the first certificate that makes resource conservation measurable. The demands on itself are extremely high: the SAP Garden is 100% reusable, making it the first and only arena in Germany to ban single-use from the stadium.
The aim of the collaboration with PreZero is to reduce waste to a minimum and return it to the cycle as far as possible and to increase the recycling rate to a maximum. "We are convinced that we have taken the right path," concludes Oliver Wesp, Managing Director of Red Bull Stadion München GmbH, after the first few weeks. "The fans have responded well to the issue of circulation and we have had very little residual waste. This is only possible thanks to a great team effort with all employees on site. We are proud of our role model function." With the advisory support of PreZero, the stadium will be further optimized, for example by standardizing procedures and developing routines. Ultimately, the venue is also set to move up into the top league in terms of resource conservation.
In addition to the SAP Garden and the PreZero Arena, the recycling expert also advises top clubs such as RCD Mallorca, RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart and FC Bayern. But PreZero is also a pioneer in its own building and consistently implements its vision: the sustainability of the company headquarters has achieved certified gold status.
