Why is plastic waste reduction so important?
Around 400 million metric tons of plastic waste is produced every year, the equivalent weight of the entire human population. Globally, less than 18% of that is collected for recycling while the rest sits in landfills, litters our oceans, or pollutes our air.
With global plastic use projected to triple by 2060, the future of raw materials looks alarmingly unsustainable.
At PreZero, we aim to help put our customers and the planet on a better path. Our infrastructure covers the entire plastic waste recycling chain from the collection of waste to the production of recyclates as a viable alternative to virgin materials.
By giving plastic waste a new life, we help build toward a cleaner tomorrow.
What is the impact of plastic recycling?
At PreZero, we contribute to the success of our partners and the preservation of our environment through sustainable plastic recycling and collaborative innovation. Discover our benefits:
Reduced demand for fossil raw materials
Known crude oil and natural gas reserves are estimated to last no more than 60 years. Reintroducing plastics into the circular economy is necessary to conserve finite natural resources and reduce dependency on them.
Less pollution
The Association of Plastic Recyclers found in a recent report that recycling plastic cuts carbon emissions by as much as 67% for PET, 71% for HDPE, and 88% for PP. Locally positioned plastic recycling facilities also further cut transportation emissions.
Sustainable supply chains
Virgin plastics are subject to volatile cost fluctuations. By contrast, dedicated plastic recycling companies like PreZero utilize locally available end-of-life plastics to help build a more reliable material supply.
Energy conservation
Plastic waste recycling can reduce total energy consumption by as much as 88% across the entire extraction, production, and transportation process compared to virgin materials.
Reduced carbon (C02) footprint
Building toward a sustainable future is at the heart of everything we do. That means continually looking for ways to reduce emissions throughout our processes, including collection route optimization and pioneering new plastic recycling technology.
Improved brand image
The use of recycled materials is becoming more important to consumers, with 83% expressing concern about the level of plastic waste polluting our oceans. As more than half of consumers report checking packaging for sustainability certifications, improving brand image today means prioritizing environmentally friendly practices.
Fewer landfills
Around 85% of global plastic packaging ends up in landfills, an unsustainable amount of waste. Plastic waste reduction is necessary to curb landfills.
Plastic waste recycling in today’s world
Of the eight billion metrics tons of plastic produced to date, less than 10 percent has been recycled. Every year, 8-10 million metric tons of plastic finds its way into our oceans while the rest is chartered across the globe to be either incinerated or landfilled.
Not only is this unsustainable for our planet’s ecosystem, but it also represents a huge waste of value. PreZero enables companies to tap into new value streams by returning plastics to where they belong – back in the supply chain.
EU Regulations for the use of recycled plastics materials
The damage that raw material dependency does to our planet and future business is clear to see. That’s why the European Union is introducing new regulations and considering proposals to advance plastic waste recycling:
European Plastics Pact
The 81 members of the European Plastics Pact are committed to plastic waste reduction through the increased use of recyclates.
By 2030, an average of 30% recycled polymers will be used across all single-use plastics, reducing dependency on virgin materials by at least 20%.
ENVI
The new End-of-life Vehicles Regulation aims to improve the environmental sustainability of the automotive sector.
Sweeping changes include the use of at least 25% recycled plastic in new vehicles and the recovery of 30% of plastics from end-of-life automotives.
PPWR
The PPWR is a European Union proposal aimed at reducing packaging pollution through the implementation of circular economy principles.
If put into effect, by 2030 all packaging produced for the EU market would have to be designed for recyclability, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
What are the different types of recycled plastic?
The many types of polymers can complicate the recycling process with the most used plastics (such as PET, PP, HDPE, and LDPE) all requiring different processes and accurate separation to make them suitable for reuse.
By combining logical plastic waste separation and collection processes with pioneering plastic recycling technology, PreZero Polymers offers our partners customized recyclates as a viable alternative for most types of plastic.
Whichever polymer is the best fit for your company and your product, achieve greater sustainability without compromise with PreZero. Our recyclates can replace virgin sources across the following plastic types:
